It’s a common knowledge that few vessels require so much specific training before getting on board as tankers. However, strict rules are justifiable as personnel’s incompetence may lead to the catastrophic consequences both to the crew and environment.

Thus, all ranks are required to take up Tanker Courses. As a rule, there are two varieties of basic trainings: Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations and Basic Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations. The program contains information about physical and chemical properties of the matters; safety management and fire- fighting operations including emergency shutdown; pollution prevention and protocol of actions in case spillage has occurred.

On the basis of these courses, officers are required to go through Advanced Training for Tanker Cargo Operations. They usually divide into three categories in accordance with tanker types: Advanced Training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operations, there is also Advanced Training for Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations and Advanced Training for Liquefied Gas Cargo Operations. During these advanced training students learn the structure of particular tanker vessel; concentrate on cargo handling operations and polish their knowledge of shipboard emergency procedures, etc.

Those who want to improve their cargo handlings skills can turn to one of the centers equipped with Liquid Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator. The training is also available for different tanker types. The simulator replicates tanker’s cargo control room, so the proper layout with control of vessel ballast and cargo system, control of trim, stability and stress, all the other functionality is in front of the trainee to practice on safely and with maximum result.

Another popular training among Tanker Courses is Crude Oil Washing. At present, crude oil tankers of 20,000 tons DWT and above are equipped with Crude Oil cleansing system which requires some skills to operate. Training was designed to educate seafarers, who will work with the COW system about principles of its safe operation; piping; tank washing machines, etc. Closely related to this training is Inert Gas System course. The system is fitted on crude oil tankers as well, so students are usually recommended to take both trainings.
