The Dangerous, Hazardous and Harmful Cargoes (HAZMAT) incl. t. C49 of US Federal Code of Rules course is created to guarantee an overall training in the field of international practice of dangerous goods handling. Training complies with the requirements of sections B-V/b and B-V/c of the STCW convention, IMDG code and IMO Model Course 1.10. It also includes guidelines from the Title 49 (Transportation) of the US Code of Federal Regulations.

Objectives:

• In the course of the training delegates obtain sufficient knowledge regarding safe handling, stowage and transportation of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes in solid form in bulk and in packaged form.
• Students learn necessary physical and chemical features of the dangerous substances that are normally transported by sea so as to raise their safety awareness in handling harmful cargoes.
• Dangerous, Hazardous and Harmful Cargoes (HAZMAT) incl. t. C49 of US Federal Code of Rules training also includes IMO and IMDG classifications of dangerous goods with instructions of handling for each class.
• Finally, delegates are taught to comply with t. C49 of US Code of Federal Regulations which contains special clause devoted to the ships transporting dangerous goods in the territorial waters of the United States.

Course content:

• General IMO and IMDG HAZMAT safety rules and requirements;
• International classifications of dangerous hazardous and harmful cargoes in solid form in bulk and in packaged form;
• List of most common dangerous goods;
• Cargo handling and packing instructions and procedures;
• Title C49 of the US Code of Federal Regulations: requirements, preparations, completion of necessary forms.

Assessment: usually the course ends with a short test.

Target Audience: Officers and ratings involved in cargo handling of Dangerous, Hazardous and Harmful Cargoes (HAZMAT).

Pre-requisites: None.

Duration: 45 days.
