It is a common knowledge that STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years.  Naturally, many training centers offer a wide range of STCW Refresher Courses. Usually they are shorter than their initial counterparts and review content so as to restore crucial skills and knowledge for the better safety and security of personnel on board.

The Basic Safety Training (Refresher Course) continues for 2 days and overviews four mandatory modules from previous course. There are also separate Refresher trainings for each of the modules e.g. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Refresher Course), etc.

Another popular training is Advanced Fire Fighting (Refresher Course). Similar to the initial training, the Refresher course consist of the classroom and practical parts. Theoretical part illuminates aspects of fire causes and prevention, fire fighting gear and systems, training of FF teams, management of injures and case studies. During the practical part, students exercise with main vessel FF system including hose work, portable FF means, learn to inspect them correctly and conduct and manage rescue operation and perform casualty control.

Also, the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (Refresher Course) and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (Refresher Course) are always in demand as well as refresher STCW medical courses. As a matter of convenience, training centers unite them with Basic Safety Training and Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher Courses into the Combination Courses.  These might have different content, but might be a great alternative to fully-fledged courses if time is a pressing matter.
