The Medical Care Onboard Ship (Refresher Course) is an intensive training designed for senior ship officers requiring an update for their initial certificate. It is worked out in the guidelines with the same STCW standards as Medical Care Onboard Ship initial course (Section A-V1/4 (4-6)) and should be completed every 5 years.

Objective:

• The main goal of the Medical Care Onboard Ship (Refresher Course) is to update officers’ existing knowledge regarding providing medical assistance within the limited range of ship medical equipment and supplies.
• Trainees also learn about new methods of injuries and illnesses treatment; receive update on pharmacology and equipment that might have upgraded for the past 5 years.

Course content:

• Diagnose medical problems onboard;
• Nursing injured or sick crew member while he or she remains onboard;
• Update on treatment: resuscitation techniques and bleeding management;
• Ship medical supplies up-date;
• Polishing skills required to carry out certain medical procedures.

Assessment: there will be a short assessment exercise at the end of the course.

Target Audience: Officers designated to provide medical care aboard requiring revalidation for their initial certificate.

Pre-requisites: the valid Medical Care Onboard Ship certificate is required to be admitted for the course. Many providers also ask for the sea-going experience of no less than 18 months. Some centers also set a revision test to assess initial delegates’ level of training.

Note: The Medical Care Onboard Ship (Refresher Course) proves to be quite demanding and requires a lot of self-study. Revision of First Aid instructions, good knowledge of Ships Captains Medical Guide and clear idea of medical care arrangements on delegate’s current vessel would be of much help.

Duration: 23 days.

Validity: 5 years.
