The course must be taken every 5 years to update experience acquired during the initial Personal Survival Techniques (PST) training. The Refresher Course is developed within the same STCW 2010 guidelines i.e. table A-VI/1-1 and puts the premium on practical part on the training.

Objective:
Upon the successful completion of the course trainees should:
• Demonstrate a considerable competence in complying with the various procedures attributed to particular emergency situation or muster signal.
• Possess sufficient knowledge of emergency equipment types and its location onboard;
• Be practiced in operating emergency equipment including life jacket, life rafts, etc.
• Refresh and upgrade their sea survival skills.

Course Content:
Life-saving equipment theory and practical exercises in the pool;
• Survival at sea training.

Assessment: there is a practical examination at the end of the course.

Target Audience: The course is developed for sea-going personnel who can avoid taking a full Basic Safety Training (Refresher Course) according to STCW regulations meaning seafarers who have 6 or more months of sea service prior to 1 August 1998 and were exempt from basic safety courses.

Pre-requisites:  the initial Personal Survival Techniques certificate or its equivalent; and Medical Fitness certificate.

Duration: 1/2 day.

Note: MCA compliant training providers also require a signed self-declaration form as a pre-requisite for the course. The form confirms that delegate had maintained his or her competence in the PST through the series of onboard trainings during the time of original certificate validity.
