It is greatly acknowledged that fire constitutes one of the most serious dangers to the modern vessels and offshore units. Fire prevention is given a considerable care with installation of various firefighting equipment and launching Fire Safety Courses for all staff levels assigned to work to on a site or ship.

Seagoing personnel receive their training through the STCW course scheme.  Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting training is a part of the Basic Safety Training module which is the first Marine Training any seafarer takes to go on board. The course is mostly practical; and once methods of precautions and fire types are described students proceed to extinguish different kinds of fire with the help of the range of firefighting equipment. Trainees also learn to rescue injured from the smoke filled confided space and perform first aid.

The next obligatory course is Advanced Fire Fighting. Here the premium is on the ability to manage the situation, delegate tasks, control fire and its spread to ventilation, electrical and fuel systems, deal with the injured, etc.

In the offshore sector many providers assign HERTM and HERTL courses as Fire Safety Courses. True, there are modules devoted, to fire fighting in their programs; however, there is a truly field-specific training which would be useful to any HLO. Helideck Fire Fighting or Helicopter Fire Fighting trainings focus on practical aspects of helicopter fire fighting and passengers rescue. It also gives well-round knowledge of Helideck and helicopter fire fighting facilities.

Another training often attributed to this category is H2S Training. It frequently comes with Breathing Apparatus (BA) module as well. This course is particularly useful in tanker and offshore industries as it educates about properties and characteristics of Hydrogen Sulphide, gives safety tips and rescue tactics, practical methods of gas detection and BA wearing.
