In 2005 IMO published the report stating that almost 40% of marine accidents that happened during that year were caused by poor language skills of crew members which led to misunderstandings and major human errors as a result. So there is no doubt about the immense importance of decent level of Maritime English Course especially for Management and Operational level of vessel personnel. Presently IMO makes attempts to impose unified standards of trainings in Maritime English Course for Officers and Ratings.

Objective:

The key goal of the Maritime English Course for Officers is to provide sufficient basis for the safe and efficient communication of Operational and Management staff in all maritime specific situations i.e. onboard socializing, ship-to-ship conversation, and ship-to-shore communication sessions.

Course content:

• SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases);
• Maritime vocabulary and technical terms (bridge and engine departments);
• General English used in maritime correspondence and professional conversations;
• Safety and security onboard procedures;
• Emergency response;
• Writing, reading, listening and speaking practices.

Assessment: Training providers use a variety of recognized Maritime English assessment tests such as ISF Marlins English Language Test (online test consisting of 85 questions that should be completed in 60 minutes); MarTEL (well-known European test platform putting the premium on SMCP), IELTS (reputable test, acknowledged by UK authorities), etc. Some training centers also use own assessment methods providing only certificates of course attendance.

Note: many training providers offer Maritime English courses depending on the applicant’s level (from Beginner’s to Advanced).

Target Audience: Management and Operational deck and engine officers.
