The Medical First Aid (MFA) course is developed for seafarers designated to provide immediate medical assistance in case of accident or illness at sea. It rests upon section A-V1/4 (1-3) of the STCW code and covers wide range of conditions that might occur during sea time and methods of coping that are available in the limited onboard conditions.

Objectives:

• The aim of the Medical First Aid (MFA) course is to equip trainees with the essential skills and knowledge so as to be able to apply first aid in case of any emergency onboard;
• Train them to seek the reference correctly either in special medical materials kept onboard or by the means of radio communication with the shore-based professional doctor;
• Acquire practical knowledge of onboard medical equipment.

Course content:

• Examination of the patient;
• Resuscitation;
• Shock and bleeding;
• Injuries to the head, spine and muscles;
• Burns, scalds and wounds;
• Temperature extremes traumas;
• Fractures and dislocations treatment;
• Infections diseases;
• Poisoning;
• Drowning and asphyxia;
• Transportation of the casualty;
• Radio medical advice;
• Onboard medical equipment.

Assessment: Practical task and oral or written examination.

Target Audience: Crew members assigned to provide first medical aid onboard of their vessels.

Pre-requisites: the Elementary First Aid (EFA) certificate or that of Basic Safety Training (BST) as it includes EFA. Some training centers also require students to possess at least 6 months of sea service prior to joining the course.

Duration: 24 days.

Validity: 5 years.
