The course is designed in compliance with STCW 2010 requirements (i.e. table A-VI/1-3) to form a part of mandatory Basic Safety Training (BST). The aim of the Elementary First Aid course is to equip seafarers with essential medical knowledge to help them cope with most wide-spread accidents and medical emergencies they might encounter onboard.

Objectives:

Upon the successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Provide first medical help to the injured or those requiring immediate medical assistance i.e. people having heart or asthma attacks;
  • Be familiar with the theory of medical care in case of medical emergency;
  • Give cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Know symptoms and be competent at treating bleeding and shock;
  • Understand the phenomena of hypothermia and be capable of helping the injured;
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge in treating burns, fractures, injures to the head and spine; using different types of bandages;
  • Be aware of dangers connected with transportation of patient with injury to the spine; be skilled in handling such casualties.

Course content:

  • Elementary First Aid theory;
  • Sequence of actions upon discovering the injured or person requiring immediate medical assistance;
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation theory and practice;
  • Recovery position;
  • Drowning;
  • Hypothermia;
  • Fractures and spinal injuries;
  • Bleeding, burns and shock;
  • Medical emergencies such as heart attack, chocking and asthma;
  • Transportation of the patient with the injury to the spine or pelvis.

Assessment: Usually there is an undergoing assessment in the ourse of the training. However, some training providers also include oral or written examinations.

Target Audience:  All seagoing personnel.

Pre-requisites: None apart from 16 years minimun age limit.

Duration: 1 day.
