The Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat other than Fast Rescue Boats course was developed to provide crew members with sufficient practice in launching and operating survival craft after the ship abandonment. The training is STCW 2010 compliant (A-VI/2-1) and is mostly practical.

Objectives:

Upon the successful completion of the course, trainees will be capable to:

• Deploy and navigate survival craft and rescue boat in case of emergency;
• Start and operate a survival craft engine;
• Take care of the other survived or injured;
• Signal location by means of radio, pyrotechnics and signaling apparatus;
• Provide first medical assistance to the crewmembers that might require it.

Course content:

• Take control over the survival craft or the rescue boat before and after the deployment;
• Operating the engine of a survival craft;
• Launch and recover a rescue boat under gravity davits quickly and safely;
• Position communication by means of signaling apparatus, pyrotechnics, etc.
• Sea survival module;
• Drowning rescue techniques;
• First medical aid and survivors’ management.

Assessment: Students are assessed by direct observation during the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats course practice tasks and through the oral and/ or written examination.

Target Audience: Marine personnel assigned to act as coxswain or to launch and operate a survival craft or rescue boat in an emergency situation.

Pre-requisites: Medical Fitness Certificate and Basic Safety Training (BST) course certificate.

Duration: 4 days.
