The Combined Medical First Aid and Medical Care Onboard Ship course unifies major topics of shipping healthcare. It is developed for the convenience of the senior officers who are responsible for the medical care onboard and complies with the STCW sections A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2.

Objectives:

• The main goal of the Combined Medical First Aid and Medical Care Onboard Ship course is to obtain comprehensive picture of the medical assistance that can be provided on board in case in of an accident or medical emergency.
• Students learn to apply first medical aid;
• Provide competent treatment using the limited range of ship’s medications supplies and equipment;
• Transport patients taking into account peculiarities of their medical condition;
• Make a diagnosis and treat patients with the help of radio medical advice.

Course content:

• Overview of ships’ medical care arrangement;
• Making a diagnosis;
• Contagious diseases, treatment of wounds;
• Traumas to head, neck and spine;
• Fractions, muscles traumas, bandages;
• Shock and bleeding control;
• Transporting the casualty and helicopter evacuation;
• Ships medical equipment;
• Pharmacology;
• Medical advice and medical references onboard;
• Injections and stitching a wound practice.

Assessment: students are assessed by the means of written or oral examination and practical demonstration.

Target Audience: Masters and other senior officers designated to provide medical assistance onboard.

Pre-requisites: Valid Elementary First Aid (EFA) or Basic Safety Training (BST) certificates.

Duration: 5 days.
