The OPITO Banksman and Slinger Stages 1 & 2 course is developed to provide personnel with no or little banksman and slinging experience activities with the essential operational skills and safety knowledge. After the Stage 1 which takes place in the accredited training providers’ facilities and consists of theoretical part and practical sessions follows Stage 2 – the supervised working place experience part during which participants should complete particular pages of the logbook.

Objectives:

• During OPITO Banksman and Slinger Stages 1 & 2 course delegates obtain basic understanding of lifting operations, important knowledge of the safety aspects of banksman and slinging activities, familiarization with relevant laws and regulations.
• In course of the practical part of the training, students receive necessary load handling and communicational skills (hand signals, radio operations) and get used to working safely and without accidents.

Course content:

• Industry regulations and guidelines i.e. IMCA SEL 019, LOLER 1998, API RP 2D, etc.;
• Risks and hazards associated with lifting activities and ways to avoid them;
• Preparation of the lifting equipment and correct methods its of storage, discard criteria;
• Hand signals and radio communication;
• Planning of lifting operations and lay-down areas;
• Lifting activities with pre-slinged loads;
• Difficult lifting operations: hard to reach loads, activities outside of crane operator’s view, etc.;
• Practical exercises with various loads and lifting gear.

Target Audience: Personnel interested in acquiring Banksman and Slinger competence.

Pre-requisites: there are no special requirements at this level.

Duration: 3 days.

Note: In order to proceed to the OPITO Banksman and Slinger Stage 3 and OPITO Banksman and Slinger Stage 4 participants must complete their OPITO log books during the offshore Stage 2. The following positions must be filled within 2 years: Responsibly carrying out 27 banksman activities and Responsibly carrying out 30 slinger activities.
