As the majority of modern vessels bear high voltage installations, there is a constant demand for specialists who would look after this equipment onboard. The High Voltage Course is provided for in STCW 2010 Amendments as the assured way to gain the required expertise.

High Voltage training is usually attended by technical personnel such as Marine Engineers, ETOs, Electricians and others.  There are two consequent levels of HV courses at present. The High Voltage Course (Operational Level) focuses on general knowledge about HV installations i.e. where they can be found on board, insulated and earthed neutral distribution systems, functions of protection devices and procedures of their operation. It also overviews hazards connected with high voltage installations and safety measures applicable to them.

After that, follows the High Voltage Course (Management Level) which takes a closer look at high voltage equipment.  Students learn to understand HV system layout and perform some maintenance of distribution capability so as to identify fault in the system and reconfigure it to maintain electrical supply of the vessel. Also, program includes some theoretical background with information about related legislation, completion of safety forms and necessary documentation.
