General Ship Handling and Maneuvering course is designed in accordance with STCW 95 Sections A-VIII/2, B-VIII/2 and B-I/12 and is recommended for all nautical officers as an optimal instrument of navigational skills development.

Objective:

Upon successful completion of the Ship Handling and Maneuvering course trainees are expected to enhance their ability to control vessel under normal and emergency conditions as well as perform necessary maneuvers such as berthing/unearthing, docking or anchoring safely and efficiently.

Course content:

• Maneuvering characteristics of different types of vessels;
• Standard maneuvers in open and confided waters including port areas, rivers, etc.;
• Wind, current, banks, shallow waters effect;
• Slow speed control with stopping and pivot point;
• Maneuvers with engines, thrusters;
• Exercises with tugs;
• Docking, undocking, anchoring, berthing under normal and strained conditions;
• Crisis management.

Assessment: Full attendance and completion of simulator exercises are required to obtain the course certificate. Some training providers also introduce some internal written assessment.

Target Audience:  Masters and navigational officers of all ranks, pilots.

Pre-requisites: Certificate of Competency and 12 months of watchkeeping experience as an OOW.

Duration: 5 days.

Note: There is the Ship Handling and Maneuvering (Refresher Course) that is recommended to attend every 5 years.
