It is a common knowledge that ISF Marlins English Language Test is most frequently used for seafarers’ language skills assessment worldwide. However, sometimes it is also vital to specify marine specialists’ English language speaking abilities. In such cases, Marlins Test of Spoken English (TOSE) comes to help.

Basically, the Marlins Test of Spoken English (TOSE) is a dialog between a seafarer and Marlins approved assessor equipped with standardized interview form. The test is usually taken after the main computer based assessment; and same as it, Marlins TOSE is customized to the rank and department of the officer or rating passing the test.

Test content:

The test questions are aimed at evaluation of the listening comprehension and grammar level with the particular focus on the fluency and accuracy of speech. Topics of conversations will include some everyday day vocabulary (weather, hobbies, domestic choirs, etc.) and duties onboard, ship layout, technicalities.

Assessment: Upon completion of the test, the Assessor provides mark for each category from E to A and defines the overall level of the assessed i.e. Beginner, Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate or Advanced. The Assessor also leaves his/her professional comments and training recommendations in a separate field of the certificate.

Note: the Marlins Test of Spoken English (TOSE) is mandatory for employment in the UK sector.

Target Audience:  Maritime personnel of any rank.

Pre-requisites: None.
