The GMDSS Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC) training was developed for mariners operating within GMDSS A1 Sea area and rests upon STCW A-IV/2 code standards.


GMDSS Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC) course provides basic level of maritime radio qualification. Students learn to operate VHF radio equipment, transmit and receive distress signals, carry out radio operations within A1 Sea area.

Course content:

• Overview of radio regulations and available systems;
• Operation of marine VHF radio equipment i.e. VHF DSC controller, Navtex receiver, handheld VHF;
• Communication exercises (distress signal receiving and transmitting practice);
• Battery maintenance module.

Assessment: Course includes written test (radio regulations and procedures, logkeeping) and simulator exercises.

Target Audience: Masters and OOW less than 500GT STCW or 200GT MCA, pilots, seafarers operating in harbors, etc.

Pre-requisites: Most training centers require fluent English and knowledge of phonetic alphabet to enter the course.

Duration: 3 days.
