Bridge and Engine Resource Management (BERM)
The Bridge and Engine Resource Management (BERM) course complies with STCW Code A-II/1, A-III/1, & A-III/6 and STCW Code A-II/2 & A-III/2 training requirements and is a combination of two courses i.e. Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and its analogue for the Engine Department. Together they provide an all-round onboard human resource training which helps to eliminate negative effect of human error factor, enhance the efficiency of ships’ personnel performance and create safe and healthy environment onboard.
Objectives:
• To obtain practical skills in efficient personnel management;
• Understand the importance of situational awareness and contingency planning;
• Manage multicultural crews and use effective communicational practices;
• Understand and employ the concept of leadership and teamwork;
• Be aware of stress, fatigue and overwork affecting operations and decision making process;
• Gain sufficient knowledge to assess risks correctly, recognize emergencies in advance and break error chains.
Course content:
• Human Resource Management introduction module;
• Effective communication onboard;
• Human factor theory;
• Situational Awareness management;
• Cross-cultural communicational issues;
• Behavior based safety and attitude;
• Workload, stress and fatigue management;
• Leadership and efficient teamwork;
• Error chain recognition and breaking;
• Emergency situation case studies.
Assessment: Full attendance and continual assessment during the course.
Target Audience: All Management and Operational level seagoing personnel.
Pre-requisites: At least Class III COC for Deck Officers and Class V COC for Engine Officers as well at least 12 months of sea-going experience.
Note: Many training providers admit cadets for the Bridge and Engine Resource Management (BERM) course. In this case, the requirements are familiarity with shipboard procedures and availability of STCW Basic Safety Training certificate of its equivalent.
Duration: 3 – 5 days.
