Basic Safety Training (Refresher Course)
The Basic Safety Training (Refresher Course) is mandatory for all mariners whose STCW Basic Safety Training certificate is about to expire after 5 years. Thus, BST (Refresher Course) provides continual proficiency within the topics of the original training and in accordance with Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3 and A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code, as amended.
Objectives:
Refresh skills and knowledge pivotal for the survival onboard in case of emergency, i.e. to:
• Remember, practice and later to demonstrate skills to use lifejackets and suits; launch a life raft and perform other sea survival techniques.
• Provide medical assistance in case of emergency.
• Refresh fire fighting experience along with ability to escape from confided spaces filled with smoke;
• Get one more opportunity to observe the importance of following safety and emergency procedures onboard, comply with orders and be considerate towards team members.
Course content:
• Personal Survival Techniques (Refresher Course);
• Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (Refresher Course);
• Elementary First Aid (Refresher Course);
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (Refresher Course)
Assessment: There is a 2 step assessment at the end of the Basic Safety Training (Refresher Course) including a multiple choice written test and practical exercises.
Target Audience: Seagoing personnel of all ranks wishing for extend their Basic Safety Training certificates.
Pre-requisites: Basic Safety Training and Medical Fitness certificates.
Duration: 2 – 3 days.
