Modern AH vessels are equipped with sophisticated computer operated winches able to perform a variety of towing and anchor-handling maneuvers. To ensure safe and efficient operation it is strongly advised that Deck and Engine officers applying for a job on AH vessels complete the Winch Operator Course available in one of the many training centers. The course is usually developed in accordance with the STCW 2010 Section B-V/e and GOMO Section 5.4.5.3 (Vessel Winch Operators)requirements and presupposes an extensive practical simulator session.

Objective:

The key goal of the Winch Operator Course is to provide participants with the essential knowledge about towing and anchor handling winch operations and practical skills required to perform them onboard. Another aim of the course is to demonstrate possible dangers associated with the basic winch operations and train students to avoid emergencies and cope with them.

Course content:

• AH winch operations planning and risk assessment;
• Types of winches, their functions and operation procedures;
• Familiarization with the components and layout of the winch system;
• Terminology, phrases and abbreviation used during the work;
• Controlling tension and monitoring load;
• Operation of winch computer;
• Winch capacities and wire length control;
• Wire operation simulator practice: Wire Spooling, Grappling, Chasing, Preset Systems and Towing;
• Emergency procedures including emergency release and breaking.

Assessment: No specific assessment required.

Target Audience: Navigating, Engine Room officers, ETOs, any personnel assigned to operate winch equipment on board of offshore vessels.

Pre-requisites: STCW COC for relevant position; previous offshore experience will be an asset.

Duration: 3 – 4 days.
