Nowadays vessel’ computers take over most stability calculations, but it is still vitally important that officers understand basic concepts. The Ship Stability and Trim course is developed to introduce bridge personnel to the theory and practice of hydrostatics, definition of vessel stability and provide them with the practical skills of hydrostatical calculations.

Objective:

Among the main goals of the Ship Stability and Trim training are the following learning outcomes:

• Familiarization with Stability and Trim industry terms;
• Theory of hydrostatics and solving hydrostatic equations to determine the pressure exerted on the ship’s structures by water and cargo;
• Ability to identify requirements for load line arrangements stated in the international and local regulations;
• Recognition of the factors that affect  the transverse the ship stability;
• Make calculations during cargo charging/discharging/moving in order to maintain positive ship stability and seaworthiness.

Course content:

• Theory of hydrostatics;
• Areas, Volumes, Forces and Moments areas;
• Center of Gravity of the vessel, buoyancy and floatation;
• Stability calculations with the cargo on board.

Target Audience: Deck officers of all ranks.

Pre-requisites: None.

Duration: 2 – 3 days.
