The Meteorology (Operational Level) course is designed is compliance with STCW 2010 (Table A-II/1) and 46 CFR requirements to provide Ratings Forming a Part of Navigational Watch as well as Junior Deck Officers with comprehensive understanding of marine meteorology with the focus of ship’s weather systems, reporting and recording procedures.

Objective:

Upon the successful completion of the Meteorology (Operational Level) course participants will be competent in:

• Recognition of ocean weather patterns;
• Using vessel sensors and weather recording systems;
• Making correct navigational decisions based on weather forecasts;
• Reporting and recording metrological conditions professionally.

Course content:

• Meteorological equipment used onboard;
• Physical features of atmosphere;
• Atmospheric pressure;
• Wind, types and effect on vessel;
• Clouds and precipitation;
• Climatology and impact on visibility;
• Pressure systems over the ocean;
• Cyclones and anticyclones;
• Weather systems and forecasting;
• Observation and reporting;
• Interpretation and passage planning.

Target Audience: Deck Ratings Forming a Part of Navigational Watch; 3rd, 2nd Officers; Deck Cadets and Trainees.

Pre-requisites: None.

Duration: 5 days.

Note for the US students: the Meteorology (Operational Level) course training program satisfies the requirements of the 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(xiii) for certification as an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 gross tons (ITC) or more and specific assessments tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 12-14: Tasks 1.9.A, 1.9.B, 1.10.A, 1.10.B, 1.10.C, 1.10.D, 1.10.E, 1.10.F, and 1.10.G.
