The Ice Navigation (Advanced Training) course is developed in compliance with the Polar Code and STCW requirements to educate Masters and Chief Officers of vessels operating in polar waters about intricate details of navigational safety and in order to stress the importance of pollution prevention in these regions.

Objective:

Upon completion of the Ice Navigation (Advanced Training) course Masters and Chief Mates will gain comprehensive understanding of the route planning, navigation, ship handling and plotting, contingency planning and emergency response applicable to the vessels of all kinds operating above the Polar Circle. The program also includes topics devoted to liability, SMS and environment protection systems installed on these ships.

Course Content:

• Introduction, review of the previous course;
• Polar Code and other relevant conventions and regulation;
• Ship handling and maneuvering in ice;
• Passage planning in waters covered with ice;
• Icebreaker operations;
• Crew management during ice areas passage, safety and workload aspects;
• Pollution prevention in polar waters.

Assessment: evaluation after the course includes a written assessment and practical task.

Target Audience: Masters and Chief Officers employed on the vessels operating in Arctic of Antarctic waters.

Pre-requisites: Master’s or Chief Mate’s license, certificate of the Ice Navigation (Basic Training) course and at least 2 month of the approved sea-going experience in polar waters or the equivalent in the deck department at the management level or while performing watch-keeping duties at operational level.

Duration: 5 days.
