Elementary First Aid (Refresher Course)
The course is developed to ensure the continued medical competence of maritime personnel and must be taken every 5 years within the Basic Safety Training (BST) week or separately in individual cases. The syllabus of the Elementary First Aid (Refresher Course) is based on the requirements of the table A-VI/1-3 of STCW 2010 Convention and mostly consists of practical tasks.
Objectives:
- To regain proficiency in providing an essential medical assistance in case of witnessing an accident or medical emergency onboard;
- To be able to treat most common injures and medical conditions which can be encountered while at sea;
- To refresh necessary techniques of transporting casualties with injures to the spine or pelvis.
Course content:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation practice;
- Bleeding control;
- Burn and electric traumas treatment;
- Shock recovery;
- Rescue, examination and transportation of casualties.
Assessment: There is a continual assessment against course objectives and practical examination at the end of the course.
Target Audience: Officers and ratings of all ranks.
Pre-requisites: Elementary First Aid (EFA) initial certificate or its equivalent.
Duration: 1 day.
