The Automatic Identification System was created as an additional navigational tool as it helps identifying vessels, assists in target tracking and provides other data raising situational awareness on bridge that raises chances of collision avoidance dramatically. So, the aim of AIS training is to familiarize trainees with AIS capabilities and provide them with safe practice of its operation. Course refers to STCW 2010 A-II/1, A-II/2 and A-II/3 standards and IMO Model course 1.34.

Objectives:

• Understand main tasks of Automatic Identification System and principles of its operation;
• Learn advantages and limitations of AIS; dangers of overreliance on the system;
• Grasp the decision making process associated with AIS application;
• Upon completion of the course trainees should be able to enter and check ship’s data in AIS;
• Operate AIS competently as an efficient navigational and collision avoidance tool.

Course content:

• Automatic Identification System description and layout;
• AIS transponders description and menu;
• Simulator training with Automatic Identification System;
• Interoperation with other bridge systems.

Assessment: No required.

Target Audience Deck officers and pilots.

Pre-requisites: OOW Certificate of Competency.
