AGT 1The program of the Authorized Gas Tester Level 1 (OPITO) course is developed to equip personnel designated to perform gas tester role with the basic knowledge to conduct tests for oxygen, flammable and toxic gases in an offshore environment safely and effectively. The training puts the premium on the confided space atmosphere measurements and actions to mitigate potential hazards of working there. In order to achieve internationally acknowledged qualification students may choose OPITO approved AGT courses.

Objective:

Upon the successful completion of the Authorized Gas Tester Level 1 (OPITO) students will cover following learning outcomes:

• Being able to define term ‘confined space’ and recognize risks associated with the gas testing there;
• Sufficient knowledge of PPE and RPE, consideration of appropriate level of RPE;
• Profound knowledge of gas testing equipment, ability to perform pre-start checks and calibration of instruments;
• In-depth understanding of physical properties and behavior of gases as well as acceptable levels of flammable gases and oxygen in premises.

Course content:

• Confined space basic overview;
• Hazards associated with operation in the oxygen deficient environment, possibly saturated with flammable or toxic gases;
• Risk assessment;
• Operational safety;
• PPE and RPE equipment;
• Permit to Work system;
• Basic principles of atmospheric monitoring and types of measuring equipment;
• Gas testers pre-start checks, calibration and set up;
• Flammable and toxic gases – behavior, properties and acceptable levels;
• Frequency of tests, performing tests in sequence;
• Representative atmospheric sample;
• Continuous monitoring techniques;
• Interpreting and reporting tests results.

Assessment: the Authorized Gas Tester Level 1 (OPITO) course includes a written Final Assessment which constitutes of 20 questions to be completed within 180 minutes. Delegates must achieve 100% score to obtain the OPITO certificate.

Note: This course presupposes 2 additional remediation attempts at Final Assessment in case the first attempt scored between 80 – 99%.

Target Audience: Offshore personnel qualifying for the role of Authorized Gas Tester.

Pre-requisites: Valid Confined Space Entry and medical certificates.

Duration: 3 days.

Validity:  3 years.
