The purpose of Anchor Handling Basic Training is to provide delegates with the general overview of anchor handling operations; explain dangers associated with them and share best communicational practices. The course complies with Guidelines for Offshore Marine Operations (G-OMO) and includes theoretical and practical parts.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the Anchor Handling Basic Training participants should demonstrate the following competencies:

• Conduct planning and risk assessment of Anchor Handling operations;
• Be able to describe correctly the design and layout of AH vessel and installed anchor handling equipment;
• Communicate efficiently with all participants of AH activities;
• Describe the process of rig move;
• Demonstrate competence in basic winch operations and use of winch computer;
• Possess a firm knowledge of the use of Triplex Shark Jaws and Karm Forks;
• Describe the process of running and retrieving an anchor with the PCP (Permanent Chasing Pennant).

Course content:

• Dangers associated with AH operations; risk assessment and contingency planning;
• GOMO guidelines;
• Construction characteristics and layout of Anchor Handling vessels;
• Equipment of AHV: winches, wires, shackles, links, etc.;
• Winch operation familiarization, calculations, functions and capacity;
• Safe and competent use of Shark Jaws (Triplex and Karm Forks);
• Anchor systems diversity and running/retrieving anchors operations;
• Communications module: bridge – deck; bridge – rig; officer – winch operator.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment at this level.

Target Audience: Deck and engine officers wishing to obtain Anchor Handling qualification.

Pre-requisites: Some previous AH experience is preferable.*

Note*: Some training providers require delegates to submit confirmation of at least one duty on bridge onboard on AHV and at least one AH operation prior to admitting to Anchor Handling Basic Training course.
