The Advanced Ship Handling course is built on the base of the initial Ship Handling and Maneuvering training and is mainly targeted at 2nd and 3rd Mates upgrading their qualification to the level of the Chief Mate and Master. The course program complies with the requirements of STCW 2010 and 46 CFR requirements.

Objective:

The key goal of the Advanced Ship Handling course is to provide Deck personnel with the more sophisticated navigating skills enabling them to control vessel regardless of the weather conditions, sea motions, narrowness of channels, etc. The training also focuses on such complicated navigational procedures as dry-docking, berthing, ice navigation, ship handling with tugs and so on.

Course content:

• Influence of external forces, standard ship handling maneuvers review;
• Ship handling in restricted waters;
• Working with pilots;
• Anchoring and berthing;
• Tugs;
• Dry docking operations;
• Heavy weather ship handling;
• Ice navigation (optional);
• Navigational emergencies response;

Note: the Advanced Ship Handling course syllabus varies considerably depending on the internal maritime legislation accepted in the country. For instance, in the USA this course is divided into 2 Weeks modules that should be completed within one year; only after that can 2nd Officer be promoted to the CO or CO to Master. Meanwhile, in the UK this training is traditionally conducted on a base of man-manned models.

Pre-requisites: valid initial Ship Handling and Maneuvering course certificate, OOW CoC.
