The offshore and wind industries have in common. On the one hand, both of them possess high potential and are highly rewarding to work in; on the other, these industries create challenging and sometimes hazardous working conditions to the personnel. One of such dangerous working environments is height. As Working at Heights presents an obvious risk to human life and health there is a number of special industry regulations and equipment standards that must be reviewed prior to obtaining a work permit. Not less important, sufficient safety equipment handling skills must be acquired before starting to work at height.

The Working at Heights courses vary greatly starting from the initial course focusing on the relevant legislation, safety and Personal Protective Equipment, Risk Assessment and safe working practices i.e. techniques to use harnesses and restraint systems vital to the operations at height. There are also more advanced trainings e.g. the Working at Height and Rescue Training which in addition to the basic course information provides description of the rescue equipment and guidance for the emergency situation and rescue procedures of stranded or unconscious casualty. Also there are combined trainings such as Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry Training Package that incorporates programs of both courses most often required for the offshore and wind installation personnel.

Especially for the wind industry, the Global Wind Organization have developed a range of own GWO Working at Heights trainings. The initial GWO Working at Heights is part of Basic Safety Training (BST) module and puts the premium on the working at the Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) safety rules, rescue from tower procedures, safety harnesses and equipment and other specific topics. The course certificate must be revalidated biannually with the help of the GWO Working at Heights Refresher training. There are also GWO Working at Heights and Rescue and its Refresher courses featuring WTG specific risks and hazards, safety and PPE equipment as well as self and casualty rescue procedures and techniques.
